best-fertility-apps

At LinkedMoms, we have been big advocates of facing fertility and infertility issues head on.  Being able to have frank and open conversations about fertility and infertility issues faced by Canadians is important to us.  We are happy to keep adding to the conversation with a new APP.  Trymester is an app that contains tools that will help you on the journey to becoming a parent.  It has an ovulation tracker, calendar, reproductive health facts and terms, a fertility journal and a clinic locator.

We are in 2015 and the ability to use and app to help you track important information that would help with you be a parent should not surprise you.  What may surprise you is the ease of use and intuitive functionality of this app.  When you make the decision to become a parent the road can be easy, challenging on hard but there is no question, having an app that keeps track of all those important elements that you need to keep track of, is important.

We are all about sharing new and interesting tools to deal with infertility and we are happy to be hosting a Twitter Party for the #TrymesterAPP on Wednesday, September 2 at 8 pm ET.

RSVP BELOW and then don’t forget to leave your handle for a chance to win an iPad mini to be given away after the party itself. Trymester App is one of the best fertility apps I have seen for Canadians.

So this coming September 2nd at 8 p.m. Join us for more information and for a great twitter party about Trymester APP and there might be a few fertility facts thrown in there too. You must be present and engaging during the party to win. You can’t win if you don’t participate. Follow the hosts twitter handles below, and don’t forget to follow the hashtag #TrymesterAPP to win on Sept. 2nd.

Download it here on your iPad which makes sense because you take your iPad with you when you visit the doctor, right? Most people have a smart phone or iPad with them at the doctor’s office. In the future Trymester will hopefully be available for Android or smartphone but for now it is on the iPad:  http://apple.co/1I7XBXG

In the mean time follow @Linkedmoms @downshiftingpro and @inkscrblr and our guest@TrymesterAPP.

Conceivable Dreams Twitter Party–What’s Next? Looking to support our efforts #OHIP4IVF #ONPOLI

Close-up of baby's hand holding mother's finger

Spring has sprung. The flowers are in bloom. It’s a beautiful day to have a baby!  It seems that on my Facebook feed there is an ever present feed of baby announcements, baby sonogram pictures and baby arrivals.  Its is the time of year that we think of birth, re-creation and celebration.  It is the time of year that we look at life with the glass half full.  That is what so many of us see but for many, this particular time of year when we celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, can be difficult if you are a couple waiting to conceive your bundle of joy.  You have been counting the days since that historic announcement.  The joy of celebrating is diminished by the fact that you have patiently been waiting for the Government of Ontario to roll out their plan for IVF treatment.  What is it going to look like? Who will be able to access the services? What do those services and treatments look like?

In 2014 budget the Government of Ontario committed $50 million dollars to patients seeking infertility treatment.  Promising patients access to one round of IVF with a single embryo transfer funded by OHIP.

As we wait for the roll-out many are frustrated with the delay in program details and implementation.  Although there has been consultation with medical and patient groups, it is important that we get this funding model right.  There are lessons to be learned from other provincial programs that were not as successful.  As we review the Quebec government-funded IVF model, we can see the demise of the original program (and, currently, its almost unattainable requirements to qualify for treatment) are pitfalls that we need to avoid here in Ontario.

We must ensure that the Ontario model is manageable and sustainable for all patients.  We do not want this to be a one-shot deal that cannot be renewed because the costs were too much over the long haul.  Consultation is necessary so that we can plan better and continue to keep IVF at the top of mind as a means to save tax-payers money.

As you well know, if you read my blog and that of Paula Schuck (community manager for Conceivable Dreams), you are aware that proceeding with IVF treatment and dealing with the possibility of multiple births creates a greater strain on our healthcare system. Taking care of mom and multiple babies can be a high-risk affair not to mention the increased chance of pre-mature birth. All very costly. We need to continue to support IVF funding in Ontario BUT it needs to be rolled out correctly with proper consultation.

We want to ensure that the patient groups are covered throughout the program and not just for short period time.  The future of the program depends on the success of families.  It’s important that we continue to share our stories of creating Ontario families with the help of IVF.

How can we help?  We need to support the MPPs and let them know we appreciate the efforts that they put forward for the benefit of families in Ontario. The Ontario patient group continues to be really active and success based.  We need to continue to share the success of IVF treatment and not just the frustration with the roll out.

We have to talk about what we should be looking for in the latter part of 2015 and then 2016.  We are hosting another Twitter Party to talk about the role for the patient group in Ontario.  How do we keep the group relevant.  Strategies on how to keep the role for infertility patients in 2016.   We can look to see how we can remain focused, positive and supportive.  We need to continue to be engaged while understanding that programs like these must be accessible to as many patients as possible.

Join us this Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST when we discuss ways that we can support our patient groups during this waiting period.  All patients in Ontario need to be here for this special twitter party event.

LinkedMoms & Conceivable Dreams continues the Conversation #OHIP4IVF #onpoli #Infertility

LinkedMoms_Graphic

In February we are lucky enough to be able to share a weekend with our Families.  Family Day has become a tradition of focusing on the family.  It is a time that we get to go tobogganing, skiing, play indoor games or just spend some special time together.  It is a time that many provinces and territories throughout Canada have set aside to celebrate our most important resource: our children.  For LinkedMoms nothing is more important to us than having the joy of bring up our families.

I have three teenaged children and Paula has two tweens that are the joy of our lives.  One of the reasons we enjoy blogging and working from home is that we have the opportunity of working from home and spending time watching them grow and develop into outstanding human beings.

We know that we have been lucky to be blessed with children but it was not easy.   Paula has been candid about how she brought together her sweet, sweet family.  There was waiting involved and that is never easy.

I too had some difficulty but I have found out that there are thousands Canadians (one in six actually) that struggle with some sort of infertility issue.

Last spring we were overjoyed to hear that the Ontario Provincial government had allocated $50 million per year in 2015 towards IVF funding program. That should help 4,000 patients in the province.  As many anxiously await the green light to go ahead, they have also put there plans on hold until funding does occur.   It is important to heed the words that Dr. Marjorie Dixon said late last fall:

Our conversation continues…

Join us this Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST when we ask what should we expect next from provincial IVF funding ? Is there any new information? Can we afford to wait? We invite all patients in Ontario to add to the conversation tonight at this special twitter party event.

Please be sure and follow Conceivable Dreams on: Twitter and Facebook.  Join the conversation using the #OHIP4IVF hashtag.

Please R.S.V.P. for the @WorldVisionCanada Twitter Party–#WorldVisionGifts

LinkedMoms, Paul Schuck and Margarita Ibbott are pleased to partner with World Vision Canada for a #WorldVisionGifts Twitter Party.  We want you to party with a purpose and join us to discuss all the wonderful ways that you can re-consider gift giving this holiday season.  We will be discussing the World Vision Gift Catalogue

If you have followed along Paula’s life changing trip to Colombia with World Vision in September, you know that this wonderful NGO has provided support to countries all over the world.  Their programs have been funded by Canadians like you either through child sponsorship or through life gifts.  The World Vision Gift Catalogue provides so many different gifts that you can give to a child, a family or a community by gifting school supplies, medical supplies, livestock – chickens, pigs, goats, clean water supplies, clothing and shelter and even soccer balls (and the trainers to help with those programs).  I chose to give my family gifts because I believe in the work World Vision Canada is doing in Colombia.

World Vision Canada Gift Guide – SAVE THE DATE for a Twitter Party – Wed. Nov. 19, 8 pm ET

save the date – #Worldvisiongifts Twitter party

The World Vision Gift Catalogue remains the favourite source for Canadian holiday shoppers looking for gifts that change lives.  Do you ever wonder how those gifts are chosen? Who receives the gifts?  How can I multiply my one gift?  You can find out more about the impact that the World Vision Gift Catalogue makes throughout communities internationally.

One of the biggest impacts that World Vision had for me was watching as my friend and LinkedMom’s co-host Paula Schuck went to Colombia to to see the impact that World Vision Canada had in Colombia.  She has a lovely series of posts that you can find on her blog. Personally as I read about how these gifts could help so many people in my native land, I too took the challenge and put my money where my mouth is and donated gifts in my family’s name..  We can make a difference and we know that World Vision Canada has made a difference to families around the world.

I am thrilled to let you know that LinkedMoms will be working with World Vision Canada this year to introduce the 2014 Gift Catalogue.  We will be discussing how you can help share the love with unique gift ideas for your family, friends and colleagues.

It isn’t a party without some great prizes that will give you the opportunity to give the gift of giving…. but we can’t tell you everything… We have special prizes that we’ll tweet about in the next few weeks so we’ll keep you posted.  For now what we want you to do is:

Join @LinkedMoms Chat–What are your plans for the Summer?#SummerSlide- 8 pack books from @SimonSchusterCA– Wed. June 18, 8 pm ET

Its here… Its here… Its finally here. Summer is finally here…

image

We are less then two weeks away from the start of summer holidays for our kids.  They get to relax, have fun and maybe get into a little bit of trouble (you know the fun kind, like having sundaes for dinner or sleeping in until noon).  The former be appeal to your little ones whereas the latter appeals to my teenagers.

With the days ticking away, we wanted to discuss what fun activities you had planned for your kids this summer.  Does it include day camp? Sleep over camp? Visit to the cottage? Do you have your summer already schedule: one week camp, one week off once week vacation, one week hitting the books (just to keep your kids sharp).

There are many ways to keep your kids entertained but what do you do to keep them sharp so they don’t lose all those things that they learned over the school year.  We want to know if you have any ‘education’ plans for your kids.  Maybe you want to keep their minds active and plan on a little ‘homeschooling’ this summer.  You want to avoid the summer slide don’t you?  So maybe a bit of math, maybe some writing?  Why not set a goal to read a book a week?

On #LinkedMoms chat this week we want to know what fun you have planned and we have a literacy expert Jen Watson to make some suggestions as to how you can keep those young minds sharp.

We have some pretty cool prize packs for you in if you drop by: Simon and Schuster Canada has given us three – 8 pack – hardcover books to keep your kids entertained (and sharp) over the holidays.

#LinkedMoms Chat celebrating #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #WAAD2014 – Wed. Apr.2 at 8 pm ET–Join Us

April 2nd is a vey special day.  The United Nation has designated every April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day #WAAD2014.  It is a day to create awareness, educate, donate and celebrate.  I recently wrote a post on The Canadian Mother Resource blog about how it came about that we found out about our son being on the Autism Spectrum. We have been working successfully to ensure that he has a positive school experience and with the help ‘of many’ he is happy in his grade 7 class at a French-as-a-first language school.

We know that as many as 1:68 children are on the Autism Spectrum.  In order to bring light to and education to ASD many organizations are celebrating #WAAD2014.  Here are just a few that you might want to know about.

In Canada Autism Society Canada creates awareness by just wearing BLUE on April 2, 2014:

WAAD-ASC-2014

Another fantastic world initiative is Light It Up Blue where national landmarks are lit up in blue to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day #WAAD2014.  Here are just a few examples show on the AutismSpeaksCA website.  Follow the #LIUB hashtag and #WAAD2014 tomorrow

In the US April is National Autism Awareness Month:  National Autism Awareness Month 2014 Badge Web Ready

Both Paula and I have children with special needs but more importantly we have VERY SPECIAL CHILDREN.  We love them to bits and we know that although we have challenging days, we also have very memorable days with them.

Please join us on #LinkedMoms Chat as we discuss some of the trials and joys of having an ASD Child (in my case).  We welcome any blog posts, FB posts etc. that you would like to share with our #LinkedMoms Community.

You’re Missing Out – Why Bloggers Need to be on LinkedIn®.

I was recently asked to write a blog post for Type “A” Parent on why bloggers need to be on LinkedIn.  I wanted to share this post with my LinkedMoms community.  I hope you enjoy it…

https://dlc1-s.licdn.com/sites/default/files/Logo-59px-TM.png

I have been on LinkedIn since 2009.  I have had a love affair with this particular platform long before many people got their first invite to connect.  I have tried, in vain, for years to preach the gospel of LinkedIn… It has not been easy but with over 225 million users in every country in the world, I know I was right in sticking to this platform.  When I joined, there were 50 million members.  I know that because when I started to do presentations about the virtues of LinkedIn  those were the numbers I quoted.

No so any more, LinkedIn has matured into a professional networking and social media platform that has more than 2 members join every second… yes, every second.

Why do I like LinkedIn?  Because you can see everything about me in one quick snapshot:  my picture, my name, the ‘many’ hats that I wear, my location, my current place of employment and most importantly, my personal URL.  It is my calling card… without having to hand out a business card.  All my contact information and links to my blog etc.  are all right here. In one spot.

LinkedIn_TypeAParent_ProfilePic

I am amazed to this day how many bloggers are not on LinkedIn®.

“I don’t get it”

“Its just for business people”

“Its not really a social network”

“I’m on there but I’m not sure what to do”

Here is my pitch to all of you blogger to get on LinkedIn® as soon as you can.

  1. It is where professionals are.  Your a professional aren’t you?  By this I mean that not only are professional bloggers to be found on LinkedIn so are those that we want to do business with: PR firms, agencies and BRANDS.  No self respecting brand is not on LinkedIn®.  You can find all those contacts that were eluding you.

Below I have typed in PR Firm New York. First it will list all my 1st connections then, my second connections.  That means I could find someone that is currently working with a PR firm in my group of ‘business’ friends or colleagues.

    LinkedIn_TypeAParent_PRFirmNYCModified

  2. LinkedIn is a one stop shopping platform for clients.  How so? You can have your website, blog, twitter handle (s), Facebook page, Pinterest and Instagram accounts all listed in one place.

“Why wouldn’t they just go to my blog?” Some of the contacts that you find on LinkedIn may ONLY BE on LinkedIn.  They may not be on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.  “Well, I don’t need them then”… Wrong. You need for those that have the power to approve your brand ambassador application, your blogger outreach contribution to review your client list to find you on LinkedIn because it is the professional networking platform.

  3. The SEO capabilities are astounding.  LinkedIn comes up in the top 3 spots when you Google yourself… Go ahead try it. If you are on LinkedIn®, Google will list your LinkedIn profile at the top of the page.  Why? Because LinkedIn works very hard at providing great SEO for its members.

    LinkedIn_TypeAParent_GoogleName

  4. You can become an expert in your field by sharing great content on LinkedIn.  Maybe it is content from your blog or an article that you share about how bloggers should be compensated or an article about the benefits or working with bloggers.  You can be that voice that people listen to in regards to blogging (or social media or organizing or travel) on this professional network.

One of the ways that potential clients can see your talents is when people endorse you for the skills that you have listed.  If you are an expert on Blogging, Facebook, Social Networking etc. clients can see how your professional network see you: as an expert in your field.  If you look at my skills and endorsements below, you will see that my strengths are in blogging, speaking and even professional organizing.  Clearly skills, I want to emphasize for those future opps.

    LinkedIn_TypeAParent_Skills

  5. Lastly, you can have recommendations that will make your profile shine!  I have landed more then one speaking engagement because I have sent potential clients to my LinkedIn profile where they can see the recommendations that I have received from verifiable sources (i.e. a LinkedIn Connections).  Why is this important? Because those potential clients (brands & PR firms alike), can see for themselves who you have worked with and what great things they say about your professionalism, integrity, creativity, reliability… you see where I am going with all of this, right?

    LinkedIn_typeAParent_Recommendation

Recommendations are golden and no there social network has that kind of pull.  It is a waste not to take advantage.

If you are serious about being a professional blogger and want to grow your network, make sure to fill out your profile and ask to connect with your new contacts via LinkedIn.  Any time someone wants to work with you, they’ll have YOUR information close at hand in their LinkedIn Contacts/Network.  They can recall your face by seeing your picture and they can review who you are and what you are good at.

If you are a blogger, you need to be on  LinkedIn.
